Literature is not only the obvious but the inescapable guide to higher journeys of consciousness . . . " What does Fry mean by this bold statement of his. The only way I believe this quote can be tackled by first think about what literature does for me. Reading to me, takes one to a fantasy land. Think about it, if you read talking Lord of the Rings, one is automatically placed in the time and land of habits, wizards, and ogars. Is this what Northup Fry means though, most likely not. Sir Richard Steele once said, "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. " I think this is on the track of what Fry is trying to tell us as an audience. Reading is a workout of the mind. The vast information that can be gained from reading is amazing! It is this mental work out that brings us to a higher level of consciousness. The more knowledge you have, the more conciouse you are of the world around you.
